PMU Healing Stages: A Week-by-Week Visual Guide

Embarking on a permanent makeup (PMU) journey is an exciting decision that can transform your daily routine and boost your confidence. Whether you have opted for powder brows, lip blush, or permanent eyeliner, understanding the PMU healing stages is crucial for achieving the best possible results. The permanent makeup healing process is a journey of patience, and knowing what to expect can alleviate any anxiety you might feel as your skin recovers.

PMU healing stages timeline showing week-by-week colour and skin changes

In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the week by week PMU healing process, detailing the physical changes, the emotional rollercoaster, and the essential aftercare required to ensure your investment yields beautiful, long-lasting results.

Understanding the Permanent Makeup Healing Process

Permanent makeup is essentially a cosmetic tattoo. During the procedure, a skilled artist implants pigment into the upper dermal layer of the skin using specialised techniques and equipment. Because the skin is broken, the body immediately initiates its natural healing response. This response involves inflammation, scabbing, peeling, and cellular regeneration.

It is entirely normal for the appearance of your PMU to fluctuate dramatically during the first month. The colour will appear too dark, then too light, before finally settling into its true shade. This is why we always advise our clients and students that the true result of a PMU treatment is not visible until at least four to six weeks post-procedure.

"The healing process is just as important as the treatment itself. We always tell our clients to trust the process. The dark, bold days and the flaky, patchy days are all stepping stones to the beautiful, soft results you desire. Patience and strict adherence to aftercare are your best tools." - Powdrr Academy Head Trainer

Week 1: The Initial Healing Phase

Professional PMU training environment

The first week is often the most intense part of the permanent makeup healing process. Your skin is actively responding to the micro-trauma, and the pigment is sitting very close to the surface.

Days 1-2: Dark and Bold

Immediately following your treatment, and for the first couple of days, your PMU will look significantly darker, bolder, and more sharply defined than you might have anticipated. This is completely normal. The pigment has not yet settled, and there may be slight swelling and redness in the treated area.

During this time, your body is producing lymphatic fluid to heal the area. It is vital to gently blot this fluid away as instructed by your artist to prevent heavy scabbing. The area may feel slightly tender, similar to a mild sunburn.

Days 3-5: PMU Scabbing Peeling

As the skin begins to heal, you will enter the PMU scabbing peeling stage. The treated area will start to feel tight and dry. Small, light scabs or flakes will form over the pigmented area.

It is absolutely critical that you do not pick, scratch, or pull at these scabs. Let them fall off naturally. Picking can prematurely pull the pigment out of the skin, leading to patchy results and increasing the risk of infection or scarring. Apply your recommended aftercare ointment sparingly to soothe the dryness, but avoid suffocating the skin.

Days 6-7: The "Ghosting" Phase

By the end of the first week, most of the scabbing and peeling should have subsided. However, you might look in the mirror and panic because the pigment seems to have disappeared completely. This is affectionately known in the industry as the "ghosting" phase.

The new skin healing over the tattooed area is opaque and milky, which temporarily obscures the pigment underneath. Do not worry; the colour has not vanished. It is simply hiding beneath a fresh layer of healing epidermis.

Week 2: The Settling Phase

As you move into the second week, the intense physical healing has largely concluded, and the skin is beginning to normalise.

Days 8-14: Colour Return

During the second week, the milky layer of new skin begins to settle and become more translucent. You will start to see the colour slowly returning, blooming back to the surface. The shade will be much softer and more natural than it was on days one and two.

The skin may still feel slightly sensitive or dry, but the dramatic changes of the first week are over. You can usually resume your normal skincare routine, although you should still avoid harsh exfoliants or active ingredients like retinol directly on the treated area.

Week 3: The Maturation Phase

Ongoing support and guidance

The third week is a period of maturation for your permanent makeup. The skin is continuing to regenerate at a cellular level.

Days 15-21: True Colour Emerges

By week three, the colour is becoming more defined and stable. The pigment is settling into the dermal layer, and the true tone of your PMU is emerging. You will notice that the strokes or shading look softer and more integrated with your natural features.

At this stage, you might identify areas where the pigment did not retain perfectly. This is completely normal and is exactly why a touch-up appointment is a standard part of the PMU process.

Week 4: The Final Result

Congratulations, you have made it through the primary PMU healing stages!

Days 22-28: Ready for the Touch-Up

By the end of the fourth week, your skin is fully healed, and the pigment has settled into its final, healed colour. The results should look soft, natural, and beautifully enhancing.

This is the time to evaluate the outcome and prepare for your mandatory touch-up appointment, usually scheduled between six to eight weeks after the initial procedure. The touch-up allows your artist to perfect the shape, fill in any patchy areas, and adjust the colour if necessary, ensuring longevity and flawless results.

Essential Aftercare Tips for Optimal Healing

To navigate the week by week PMU healing process successfully and achieve the best retention, strict adherence to aftercare is non-negotiable.

  1. Keep it Clean: Gently cleanse the area as directed by your artist using a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid harsh scrubbing.
  2. Keep it Dry: Protect the treated area from excessive moisture. Avoid long, hot showers, swimming pools, saunas, and heavy sweating during the first 10-14 days.
  3. Moisturise Appropriately: Apply the provided aftercare balm in a very thin layer. Over-moisturising can lead to poor retention, while under-moisturising can cause heavy scabbing.
  4. Hands Off: Never touch the healing area with unwashed hands, and absolutely no picking or scratching at the scabs.
  5. Sun Protection: Keep the area out of direct sunlight during the healing process. Once fully healed, always apply SPF to prevent the pigment from fading prematurely.

What to Avoid During the PMU Healing Stages

Certain activities and products can severely compromise your healing and the final result of your permanent makeup.

    • Makeup: Do not apply makeup directly on or near the treated area until it is fully healed (usually after two weeks) to prevent infection.
    • Active Skincare: Avoid products containing AHAs, BHAs, Retinol, or Vitamin C on the treated area, as these can accelerate fading and irritate healing skin.
    • Facials and Treatments: Postpone facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, and microdermabrasion until the skin is completely healed.
    • Sleeping on Your Face: Try to sleep on your back to avoid rubbing the pigment off on your pillowcase.

When to Contact Your PMU Artist

While the permanent makeup healing process involves many changes, certain symptoms warrant professional advice. Contact your artist or a medical professional if you experience:

    • Excessive redness, swelling, or pain that worsens after the first few days.
    • Thick, yellow, or green discharge from the treated area.
    • A foul odour emanating from the site.
    • Red streaks spreading from the tattooed area.
    • A fever or flu-like symptoms.

These could be signs of an infection, which requires prompt attention.
