PMU CPD Plan: How to Run an Annual Skills Audit
Build a useful PMU CPD plan with an annual skills audit covering technical practice, safety, consultation, client outcomes and business development.
By Powdrr Academy, PMU Education & Business Team
Continuing professional development should change what happens in the treatment room. Collecting certificates without connecting them to case outcomes, risk or client feedback can create a busy folder but not better practice.
The short answer: audit your real work across technical skill, safety, consultation, outcomes and business systems; rank the gaps by risk and frequency; choose learning with a practical objective; then record how you applied and reviewed it.
There is no responsible universal number of CPD hours for every UK PMU artist. Your insurer, training provider, professional body, employer or local licensing conditions may set requirements. Check each one directly and keep evidence.
Audit five areas of PMU practice
| Area | Evidence to examine | Example development question |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | Practice sheets, immediate and healed cases, corrections and trainer feedback | Where is retention or shape consistency weakest? |
| Safety | Cleaning checks, product records, incidents, near misses and waste arrangements | Can every product and batch be traced quickly? |
| Consultation | Records, client questions, declined cases and expectation gaps | Which risk or limitation is not explained clearly enough? |
| Client outcomes | Healed reviews, complaints, maintenance patterns and follow-up | What do outcomes show that immediate photos cannot? |
| Business | Bookings, cash flow, cancellations, privacy and marketing quality | Which system creates avoidable pressure or confusion? |
Score gaps by risk and frequency
Use a simple 1–3 score for potential harm, how often the situation occurs and your current confidence. Address high-risk gaps first even when a more fashionable technique is tempting. A weak escalation route, inconsistent batch record or recurring consultation misunderstanding usually deserves priority over expanding the service menu.
Stay within scope while learning. A course booking is not permission to perform an advanced treatment before training, assessment, insurance and any other relevant requirements are complete.
Write an outcome-based CPD plan
Replace “take a colour course” with a measurable learning objective: “By October, improve colour-selection reasoning by completing guided theory, documenting ten supervised selection exercises and reviewing healed evidence with a qualified mentor.” The objective names the problem, activity, application and review.
- Need: what evidence revealed the gap?
- Outcome: what should you be able to do more safely or consistently?
- Method: supervised practical training, reading, observation, mentoring, simulation or case review.
- Application: how will learning enter the workflow without exceeding scope?
- Evidence: feedback, reflective notes, revised process, practice record or outcome review.
- Review date: when will you decide whether the change worked?
Build a 12-month development cycle
- Quarter 1—foundations: infection control, records, consultation, emergency and concern pathways.
- Quarter 2—technical depth: choose one treatment within scope and review technique, colour and healed cases.
- Quarter 3—client experience: audit accessibility, expectation-setting, aftercare and healed reviews.
- Quarter 4—business resilience: review cash flow, insurance, stock, privacy, marketing claims and next year’s risks.
Use the PMU client journey as the spine of the audit and the stock-control guide for operational evidence.
Keep a CPD record that proves learning
For each activity, record the date, provider or source, learning objective, time, key points, how it changed practice and the review result. Retain certificates where relevant, but add reflection. If guidance or product instructions change, record the version you reviewed.
Discuss real cases without exposing client identity. Use appropriately anonymised information and secure channels. When you rely on a mentor, confirm their competence for the question rather than assuming popularity equals expertise.
Frequently asked questions
How many CPD hours does a PMU artist need?
There is no single answer for every artist. Check current insurer, employer, course, professional-body and local licensing conditions and document the requirements that apply to you.
Does watching a webinar count as PMU CPD?
It can contribute when relevant and permitted by the body setting your requirements. Record the objective, learning and how you evaluated its application—not just attendance.
How often should a PMU skills audit be completed?
Run a full audit at least annually and shorter reviews after incidents, repeated feedback, new services, product changes or significant guidance updates.
What should a new PMU artist prioritise?
Prioritise safe foundations, supervised technical competence, consultation, records and recognising when to stop or refer. Expand the menu only after those systems are reliable.
